Art Activism Matters

Thesis:

This study tested hypotheses regarding the relationship between my curriculum as a middle school art teacher in the state of Pennsylvania and the incorporation of social activism into the art classroom setting. It was hypothesized that the inclusion of relevant social issues is positively related to middle school students’ intrinsic motivation through the creation of artistic pieces.

These thesis ideas are developed by the author as she explains her experience going to an exhibition on Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Table" where she thought she would learn about the artist, the art piece, and her process; however, the author was surprised to learn about social and feminist issues while there.  This enlightenment kickstarted her journey as a feminist and fighter for social justice. Gender and social issues are a ginormous topic of conversation in the art world.

The author continues to explain how we currently live in a world where the news and media is seen everywhere and by everyone, even young students.  As a middle-school teacher, the author wants her students to create issue-based artworks in the classroom to tie together current events and the arts to make learning and creating more meaningful.

The author talks about curiousity, exploration, and self-reflection as important ideas in the classroom. She encouraged her students to practice art-activism.

In class how can we have a conversation as teachers about current events today that we would enjoy bringing into our classrooms? What issues about gender, politics, social issues, race, reality television, movies, etc can we discuss and create art projects for. On another hand, what artist do we know today that currently focus on activism and bringing current events into their artwork? Do they create art that can inspire projects we bring into the classroom?
